Updates are available from Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU). But, some features listed in the release notes are only available if you have an Office 365 subscription. These release notes also apply to Office 2016 for Mac, which is the perpetual version of Office for Mac and is available as a one-time purchase from a retail store or through a volume licensing agreement. Office for Mac that comes with an Office 365 subscription is updated on a regular basis to provide new features, security updates, and non-security updates. Deze update wordt overigens ook via de Microsoft AutoUpdate aangeboden en in dat geval kan de download kleiner zijn. De update van het kantoorpakket voor macOS, die het versienummer naar 16.15 optilt, wordt aangeboden in losse downloads per module, die in grootte variëren van 413MB tot 1,1GB.
Office 2016 voor Mac bevat naast Word, PowerPoint, Excel en Outlook ook het notitieprogramma OneNote. Microsoft heeft Office 2016 voor Mac voorzien van een update.
